Next Xbox update could add 1 GB to DVD storage space
Space added with the removal of current anti-piracy measures
It has emerged that the new Xbox Dashboard update which features an "updated Xbox 360 disc format" may add up to a gigabyte of space on 360 game DVDs.
According to information acquired by Digital Foundry current anti-piracy measures take up just over a gigabyte on Xbox 360 game discs and the new update, due to be tested shortly, might remove those measures boosting the storage space on 360 DVDs from 6.8 GB to 7.95 GB.
Due to the relative prevalence of piracy on the Xbox 360, Microsoft may be removing the current measures in order to experiment with some new measures, the happy side-effect being adding another gigabyte of disc space to developers.
Disc space has been controversially limited with Capcom bemoaning the limits of DVD when they were developing Lost Planet 2. They are also beginning to reach their limit with Halo: Reach topping out at 6.6GB.
