Bungie: GDC MMO comments were a joke
That old chestnut...
Bungie has backtracked on comments made by David Aldridge on a panel at last week's Game Developer's Conference.
Aldridge had slid in a comment in the final panel of his Powerpoint presentation that suggested that Bungie were hiring for an action MMO title.
This set the wheels running in the games press and the news was soon all over the web that their next project, as rumours have been suggestion was indeed an action MMO.
The have since backtracked on these comments on their official website claiming that this was "joke" by David Aldridge that nobody got.
The site said: "Tired of pretending that he's not a -blam!-in' rock star from Mars, David Aldridge inhaled a huge hit of David Aldridge at GDC yesterday. Subsequently, his face melted off and children wept over his exploded body. After the childish tears, gelatinous gibs, and acrid smoke cleared, an industrious journalist noticed the final slide from David's GDC deck which apparently proclaimed that we were hiring for a "massively...multiplayer action game." Ruh oh."
The post continued: "Now, in rehearsal Aldridge was convinced that everybody got the joke. It was all in the delivery, he assured us, and he was certain it was clear that he was playfully riffing off of the recent rumors. Unfortunately, most people can't figure David out - they can't process him. And we don't expect them to. You can't process David Aldridge with a normal brain. You'd need tiger blood and Adonis DNA."
Whether this is a joke or not there are enough rumours to suggest that Bungie may be covering their backsides for now. After all there is no smoke without fire and they wouldn't be the first developer to bend the truth - think David Jaffe and the "We're not working on a new Twisted Metal" saga from last year. We'll keep you posted as to how this one develops.
